
John D. Bassitt, 86, of LaFayette, died May 17, 2010 at his residence surrounded by his wife, Bessie Yvonne, and his children, Debra, Robert, and Scott.
Mr. Bassitt was born March 27, 1924 in Lima to Oak Donald and Susan Doris (Barr) Bassitt; they preceded him in death. He married Bessie Yvonne Haney on May 4, 1968 and she survives in LaFayette.
Mr. Bassitt worked at National Lime and Stone Quarry for 20 years, and retired from Dingledine Construction. After retirement, he worked at Hawthorne Hills Golf Course for 17 years. Mr. Bassitt was a member of the Union Chapel Missionary Church, Lima. He enjoyed hunting, mechanical work, and reading. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family more than anything else.
Survivors include: sons, Robert (Tamera) Bassitt, of Lima, Scott (Polly) Bassitt, of Utica; daughter, Debra (Bob) Howard, of Waynesfield; grandchildren, Samantha, Taylor, Hayley, Bryce, and Kendra; brothers, Sam (Barb) Bassitt, of Lima, Max (Marlett) Bassitt, of Lima; sister, Corrine Brown, of LaFayette.
Three brothers, Royce Bassitt, Bob Bassitt, and Ralph Bassitt, and three sisters, Geneva Bassitt, Dorothy Docter, and Alice Johns preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held May 20, 2010 at Union Chapel Missionary Church, 4869 Ada Road, Lima. Pastor Mark Bayliff will officiate. Burial will be in LaFayette Cemetery in LaFayette, Ohio. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, and one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton, or Union Chapel Missionary Church, Lima.
