BHS Latin Club Donates to A.L.L. Love Luggage Program

by Austin Arnold      The Bluffton High School Latin Club recently completed a project that undoubtedly provided a little joy and comfort for foster children in Allen County. Just before the winter break, the BHS Latin Club raised $1,000 for the Allen Lima Leadership Love Luggage program.
The objective of the Love Luggage program is to provide foster children with proper luggage to store their belongings in, instead of garbage bags, which are commonly used for storage when children are placed into foster care. Using trash bags sends a very negative message to the foster children, but luggage bags, such as backpacks, send a different kind of communication, one that shows the children they are valued and important.
Every year the BHS Latin Club takes on a service project, and upon a student bringing in a flier explaining the Love Luggage program, it was decided they would participate to help out local foster care children. The fundraising efforts were launched in November, that way a donation could be made in time for the holidays. Latin Club Advisor and teacher Pat Bassett and her students made a very wise selection in choosing to sell cookie dough to raise money for the project. Since it was right around the holiday season, cookie dough was a very popular product to sell and each Latin Club member and student sold at least one tub of cookie dough. Altogether there are 106 Latin students at BHS. There were at least 10 students that sold over 10 tubs of cookie dough individually. A total of 262 tubs of cookie dough were sold, and this was all done in one week.
“They did well. Every student sold at least one tub. For the most part, Latin students are highly motivated, they’re highly motivated in the classroom and in every project they take on,” Bassett said.
